About
Ninja da Grana is a free resource for learning to embroider flowers by hand. Every guide on the site is written for people who have never threaded an embroidery needle, or who tried once, ended up with a knot on the back of the fabric, and put the hoop away.
What you will find here
- Groundwork guides that explain the fundamentals: which fabric and thread to use, how to load a hoop, how to transfer a design, how to choose colors and how to finish a piece.
- Stitch tutorials for the stitches behind almost every embroidered flower: satin stitch, woven wheel, lazy daisy, French knots, stem stitch and fishbone leaves.
- Flower projects from a first daisy to roses, wildflowers, wreaths and full bouquets, each with a design you can draw yourself.
If you are new, the best place to begin is Hand Embroidery Supplies for Beginners, followed by the guide to using an embroidery hoop and a first embroidered daisy. The full list of guides is on the Tutorials page.
How the guides are written
Each tutorial describes one action per step, says how many strands of floss to use, and points out the step where beginners most often go wrong. Measurements are given in inches and centimeters. Times are rough estimates for a beginner, not promises.
The illustrations on this site are simplified drawings made to show where the needle goes and how a finished stitch should look. They are diagrams, not photographs of stitched pieces.
The flower designs described here are simple original designs written for this site, given as measurements so you can draw them on your own fabric. The stitches themselves are traditional and free for anyone to use. We do not reproduce commercial patterns, and we do not publish invented reviews, ratings or testimonials.
Corrections and suggestions
If a step is unclear, a measurement looks wrong or a link is broken, please tell us through the Contact page. Clear instructions matter more to us than anything else on the site, and corrections are always welcome.
